Chasing Diamonds Blanket (Free Pattern)

I’m so happy to finally be able to share my “Chasing Diamonds” pattern with you! 😊 Sorry it’s taken a little longer than I’d thought to get the pattern out to you. It’s been hectic here lately!

I’d like to say a special thank you to the lovely ladies who tested the pattern for me! Thank you for giving up your time to help me and for all of your support ❤️ To see their finished blankets and give them a follow see my post on Instagram here

This post includes the free pattern of the smaller version of the blanket, however when I say “smaller” I don’t necessarily mean small … it’s actually quite a big blanket! 😂 The large version is big enough to cover the top of a King Sized bed! 😅

A PDF pattern for both blankets, including charts and information how to adapt the size of your blanket, can be purchased via my Etsy Shop here.

It’s the type of blanket that can be hooked up using any type of yarn. One of my testers followed this pattern using fingering weight yarn and it made the perfect baby blanket 😍

I really hope you enjoy the pattern, I’ve loved every minute of designing this one.

Chasing Diamonds Blanket

This pattern has been written using US Crochet terms and is designed with a confident beginner in mind.

If you can read a crochet pattern and complete basic crochet stitches you should have no problems with the pattern.

The blanket can be made using any yarn, however using a different weight yarn will mean you will end up with a smaller or bigger blanket. It’s the perfect stash busting project but also looks good made using one main colour and a contrasting colour for the border.

The blankets pictured were made using Aran weight yarn, the larger blanket was made Paintbox Simply Aran (acrylic) in Mustard and Raspberry Pink, the smaller grey blanket was made using various yarns from my stash.

You are welcome to sell any blankets that you make from this pattern, however please don’t pass this pattern off as your own or adapt it in any way. Please also credit me as the designer by linking any listings to my Etsy Shop or this blog.

I would love to see your finished blankets! Please tag me on Instagram using @mycrochetplace or by using the hashtag #mycrochetplaceuk or #chasingdiamondsblanket

The Small Blanket measures 46 inches x 46 inches

What you’ll need:

• Aran weight yarn (For the main body of the small blanket (pictured in the grey shades) I used approx 713 grams of Aran Weight yarn from my stash and approx 80 grams of yarn for the border.

• Size I Hook / 5.5 mm

• Embroidery Scissors

• Darning Needle for weaving in your ends

Crochet Terms and Abbreviations (US Terms):

• DC – Double Crochet

• CH – Make a Chain

• St. – Stitch

• DC CH1 Sp: Make 1 DC in Chain 1 space

• SK – skip a stitch a specified number of times

• V St. (V Stitch) – Make DC, CH1, DC in same Stitch

• V St. Cluster – Make DC, CH1, DC, CH 2, DC, CH 1, DC in Corner Space

• ** – this indicates a long repeat of the pattern, repeat the instructions between the stars the number of times (x) indicated.

• ( ) – this indicates a short repeat of the pattern, repeat the instructions between the brackets the number of times (x) indicated.

Gauge:

Gauge is not important for this blanket but it is important to keep the same tension in order to make sure that the square doesn’t warp or twist.

Pattern Notes:

• The Chain 2 at the start of each round will count as a double crochet. Be mindful that on some rounds that the pattern will tell you to chain 3, this will count as a double crochet and a chain 1 stitch.

• You will be working in the round whilst making this pattern, therefore at the end of each round you will need to slip stitch into the second (top) chain of the starting chain to complete the round.

• The start of each round is made using CH 2, which counts as a DC. I found that Chaining 2 was less noticeable when joining with a slip stitch than when I used a CH 3.

• One of my testers started her rounds with a Chainless Starting Double Crochet Stitch which also worked well in hiding the join of the round. There are numerous YouTube video’s available that shows you how to make this stitch.

• Be mindful of the slip stitch at the end of some rounds!

Round 39: CH 2, DC in each stitch around the blanket including in each CH 1 Space, make Corner Shell St. in each corner, finish the round by making a slip stitch into top of starting chain. Cut off yarn and weave in all ends.

Border

The border can be worked in the same coloured yarn or a contrasting colour, either way it is easier to start the border from a corner chain 2 space.

Round 1: Attach yarn to Corner CH 2 space, In corner space, CH1 [counts as first SC], SC, CH 2, 2 SC, continue round making SC in each stitch around the blanket, remembering to make 2 SC, CH 2, 2 SC in each corner space. End the round by making a Sl. St. into the CH 1 from the beginning of the round. Sl St., into CH 2 space.

Round 2: CH 5 [counts as DC plus CH 2], V St., SK 2 [SC], V St., SK 2, … continue alternating these stitches around. Before each corner space you will need to SK 3 [SC] before making V St. Cluster in each corner CH 2 space.. In final corner space end by making DC into base of the CH 5, CH 1, Sl. St into the 3rd Chain to complete round. Sl St into CH 2 Space.

Round 3: CH 5, V St. in CH 2 Space, V St. in each CH 1 space around the blanket remembering to make V St. Cluster in each corner CH 2 space. End the round by making DC in base of CH 5, CH 1, Sl St. to 3rd chain. Cut off yarn and weave in ends.

The blanket may need some gentle blocking after completion to straighten out the sides, you can do this by washing or slightly dampening your blanket, stretching it out slightly until the edges are straight and pinning it into place to a blocking board to dry.

Now on to writing up my next pattern … look out for a sneaky peek in a post next week!

Best Wishes and Happy Hooking
